The Ombudsman Just Recovered $5.3 Million in Aged Care Wages — And Funding Wasn't the Problem

Monday 31 August 2026  •  By Timothy, CPA — Managing Director, Professional Financelink (PFL) The Ombudsman Just Recovered $5.3 Million in Aged Care Wages — And Funding Wasn't the Problem Thirteen of 22 providers investigated had underpaid staff. The leading cause was classification — which is not a funding issue, it's a data issue. On Friday the Fair Work Ombudsman published the results of its targeted aged care compliance campaign. More than $5.3 million is being back-paid to nearly 3,600 direct care employees . Of 22 residential and home care providers investigated, 13 were found non-compliant with workplace laws in one or more areas, eight were compliant, and one remains under investigation. Every one of the 13 non-compliant providers had underpaid employees. The number that should interest a finance leader isn't the $5.3 million. It's the average: $1,478 per employee . The investigation doesn't make findings about intent, and it isn't the jo...

Finance Reads of the Week: The NDIS Claim Window Becomes Law, Two Childcare Balance Sheets Crack, and the Aged Care Leave Grant Finally Opens

30 August 2026  •  By Timothy, CPA — Managing Director, Professional Financelink (PFL) Finance Reads of the Week: The NDIS Claim Window Becomes Law, Two Childcare Balance Sheets Crack, and the Aged Care Leave Grant Finally Opens Five operational and compliance reads for NFP, NDIS, aged care, childcare and SME finance teams — including two this blog has been hedging for weeks, both now settled. Sunday's round-up is the compliance-and-operations digest: the deadlines, funding conditions and rule changes that don't make headlines outside the sector but change what your finance function has to do. This week is an unusually decisive batch. Something we'd been calling "proposed" for eight weeks is now an Act, two childcare operators put hard numbers on a pressure the sector has been describing qualitatively, and a grant flagged here ten days ago as unpublished has opened. 1. The NDIS 90-day claim window and record-keeping duty are no longer proposals. They...

AI News Wrap-Up: A $30 Trillion Market Claim, Australia Quietly Using AI for the Back Office, and 100+ Companies Sounding a Cyber Alarm

29 August 2026  •  By Timothy, CPA — Managing Director, Professional Financelink (PFL) AI News Wrap-Up: A $30 Trillion Market Claim, Australia Quietly Using AI for the Back Office, and 100+ Companies Sounding a Cyber Alarm Six stories from the past week — one enormous number, one that probably describes your finance team, and two smaller changes to what these tools now keep and mark. Every Saturday I pull together the AI stories that matter to a finance function rather than the ones that trend. This week ran in three pairs: how much money the industry believes is on the table, governance arriving as a product feature rather than a policy, and two quieter changes to what Claude keeps and what it marks on the way out. 1. Anthropic tells IPO investors its addressable market is worth more than $30 trillion Ahead of a share offering that reporting suggests could come as early as September or October, Anthropic is pitching investors on a total addressable market above ...

Three of Your Biggest FY27 Cost Lines Are Being Set by People You'll Never Meet

Image
Friday 28 August 2026  •  By Timothy, CPA — Managing Director, Professional Financelink (PFL) Three of Your Biggest FY27 Cost Lines Are Being Set by People You'll Never Meet The finance question in funded sectors is no longer how to reduce the cost base. It's what a finance function does when it can no longer negotiate one. Every budget process contains a buried assumption: that the organisation has some influence over its own costs. Not total control — but enough that effort applied to negotiation, procurement or workforce design changes the number. That assumption is what makes a budget feel like a plan rather than a forecast. Across the funded sectors, it has quietly stopped being true for the largest cost lines. Not because costs are rising — that's ordinary and manageable — but because the mechanism that sets them has moved outside the organisation entirely. This is a structural observation rather than a news item; none of the decisions below are new, and ...

Nearly Four Months of AI Inside Excel: What It Catches in a Model, and What It Can't

Thursday 27 August 2026  •  By Timothy, CPA — Managing Director, Professional Financelink (PFL) Nearly Four Months of AI Inside Excel: What It Catches in a Model, and What It Can't Long enough to stop speculating. The strengths and the blind spots are both consistent — and they divide along a line that tells you exactly how to use the thing. In its announcement of 5 May, Anthropic confirmed the Claude add-ins for Microsoft 365 as generally available across Excel, Word and PowerPoint, alongside ten prebuilt agent templates aimed at finance work — model building, general ledger reconciliation, month-end close, statement auditing and others. Microsoft's own Copilot has been in the same surface considerably longer, and now lets you choose the underlying model. That's close to four months of live use in the one case and well over a year in the other. This isn't a news post, and there's no August development to report. It's the assessment that only become...

Build the Measurement Two Weeks Before the Pilot, or You'll Never Have a Number

Wednesday 26 August 2026  •  By Timothy, CPA — Managing Director, Professional Financelink (PFL) Build the Measurement Two Weeks Before the Pilot, or You'll Never Have a Number More than half of the industry can't evidence what its AI deployments are worth. The reason is almost never the technology — it's that nobody wrote down what "before" looked like. There is a board meeting that happens in a lot of organisations about nine months after an AI tool goes in. Someone asks what it's delivered. The answer that comes back is a story: the team says it's much faster, people like it, the month-end feels smoother. All of that may be perfectly true, and none of it is a number. The finance leader in the room is usually the one who ends up wearing that. And the honest position is that the measurement problem was created long before the meeting — on the day the pilot started without a baseline. How widespread this is The Cambridge Centre for Alterna...
