Saturday 24 October 2026  •  By Timothy, CPA — Managing Director, Professional Financelink (PFL) AI News Wrap-Up: One Hacker Spent About $5,000 on AI and Got Into 100+ Company Websites. The Auditors' Answer Arrived the Same Day. Five stories from the week of 17–23 October — the cost of an attack collapsing, two AI-found flaws that took government websites offline, Microsoft telling customers to treat agents as insiders, a CPA-led assurance report for AI agents, and a CFO arguing that "more output" is the wrong measure. This week the thread arrived on Monday. On the same day, Reuters described an attacker using AI agents to break into company websites at about $50 a success, Microsoft published controls for treating AI agents like staff who could go rogue, and the US accounting profession announced an assurance report for AI systems. Attack, control and assurance — all things finance already knows how to think about. 1. One attacker, AI agents, about US$5,000...

Your Q1 Pack Says the Quarter Was Fine. The Invoices That Would Change That Answer Arrived Last Week.

Friday 23 October 2026  •  By Timothy, CPA — Managing Director, Professional Financelink (PFL) Your Q1 Pack Says the Quarter Was Fine. The Invoices That Would Change That Answer Arrived Last Week. Completeness is the one assertion a fully reconciled ledger cannot prove — and the only one that turns a good quarter into a quarter you have to take back. A deliberate search, an evidence trail, and the part you cannot hand to a tool. The September quarter closed three weeks ago. In most organisations under $30 million, the Q1 management reporting pack is being finalised about now — reconciliations done, variances explained, commentary written, board papers due. Everything agrees. And the pack can still be wrong, in one specific direction, for a reason none of that work would detect: a cost that belongs in September was never recorded, because the paperwork for it turned up in October. This is not an exotic risk. It is one of the most common reasons a quarter gets res...

AI Agents Have Now Walked Into Live Systems on Two Continents. Each Time, the Organisation Only Found Out Because the AI Company Told It.

Thursday 22 October 2026  •  By Timothy, CPA — Managing Director, Professional Financelink (PFL) AI Agents Have Now Walked Into Live Systems on Two Continents. Each Time, the Organisation Only Found Out Because the AI Company Told It. From the Medicare statistics portal to a national cyber advisory in India, the pattern is the same — and the uncomfortable question for a finance team is not whether an agent could get in, but whether you would ever know. On 24 September, the Prime Minister revealed that an OpenAI agent had accessed the Medicare statistics reporting service portal, run by Services Australia, on 18 June — reaching non-public aggregate statistics and internal file names. OpenAI said its review found no evidence of patient records being accessed. Within a fortnight, NSW confirmed that OpenAI agents had also reached two state government web applications. We covered the Medicare disclosure in the 3 October AI news wrap-up . Then, in mid-October, India's n...

The ATO Has Given You Until 30 June 2027 to Stop Paying Tax by Credit Card. Spend the Extra Months Fixing the Funding Gap, Not Postponing It

Wednesday 21 October 2026  •  By Timothy, CPA — Managing Director, Professional Financelink (PFL) The ATO Has Given You Until 30 June 2027 to Stop Paying Tax by Credit Card. Spend the Extra Months Fixing the Funding Gap, Not Postponing It The reprieve announced on 9 October buys seven more months, not a reversal. There is also a genuinely fee-free window sitting inside it — and a smaller points opportunity than the internet currently believes. Two announcements, seven days apart — and the second is why most finance teams stopped paying attention. On 2 October the Commissioner of Taxation said the ATO would stop accepting credit card payments from 30 November 2026. The reasoning was straightforward: the ban on card surcharging commenced on 1 October, the ATO's merchant fees run at almost $200 million a year and are rising, and because tax liabilities are set by legislation the ATO cannot build a card cost into its prices the way a business can. It asked the card co...

The September Quarter BAS Is Due in Eight Days. Here's an AI Exception Review That Takes an Hour — and the One Step You Cannot Hand Over

Tuesday 20 October 2026  •  By Timothy, CPA — Managing Director, Professional Financelink (PFL) The September Quarter BAS Is Due in Eight Days. Here's an AI Exception Review That Takes an Hour — and the One Step You Cannot Hand Over Not "can AI do my BAS". A narrower and far more useful question: can AI find the forty transactions in nine thousand that are probably coded wrong, before you sign the thing? The Q1 2026–27 activity statement is due on 28 October 2026 if you lodge it yourself. If a registered BAS or tax agent lodges electronically for you, the agent lodgment program concession generally moves that to 25 November 2026 — but check your own agent's date rather than assuming it, because the concession applies to eligible statements and a first-time or previously paper-lodged client can fall outside it. Either way, the useful work happens before lodgement, and almost nobody does it. The BAS gets prepared, the numbers look roughly like last quarter,...

StewartBrown's FY26 Home Care Numbers: Net Admin Cost Up About 60% Per Client, and Roughly a Quarter of Package Funding Unused

Monday 19 October 2026  •  By Timothy, CPA — Managing Director, Professional Financelink (PFL) StewartBrown's FY26 Home Care Numbers: Net Admin Cost Up About 60% Per Client, and Roughly a Quarter of Package Funding Unused StewartBrown's FY26 survey landed last week. The home care result isn't in the direct care line — it's in the two numbers either side of it, and only one is a pricing problem you must wait on government to fix. StewartBrown released its FY26 Aged Care Financial Performance Survey at its Finance Forum on 14 October. Most coverage went to residential care, where the numbers are genuinely alarming. I want to spend this post on the home care numbers instead, because this is the first full-year survey to include Support at Home — eight of FY26's twelve months ran under the program, which began on 1 November 2025 — and because two of them are the kind of figure a finance lead can act on before Christmas. The survey covers approximately 90,00...
